Neurocenter Bern

Neurocenter at University Hospital Bern Inselspital represents an internationally renowned nucleus of innovation in stroke medicine, collaborating in several international multicentre trials and leading in innovative stroke research strategies. Neurocenter Bern was one of the first centres which used stent-retriever based thrombectomy in the Solitaire FR Thrombectomy for Acute Revascularisation (STAR) trial (NCT01327989). Solitaire™ With the Intention For Thrombectomy Plus Intravenous t-PA Versus DIRECT Solitaire™ Stent-retriever Thrombectomy in Acute Anterior Circulation Stroke (SWIFT DIRECT) trial (NCT03192332) has shown that direct mechanical thrombectomy failed to demonstrate non-inferiority to bridging thrombolysis in directly referred stroke patient to highly specialized endovascular centers. Considering the expertise and ongoing projects regarding thrombolysis and technical reperfusion success, treating patients with non-complete reperfusion after thrombectomy appears as the next step in the field of endovascular stroke treatment.
